Act 2 - First Outpost

Act 2 is the first settlement-scale act. Using what the Core and Camp made possible, the player founds the first Outpost-tier Settlement, the first population-bearing site in the settlement ladder, and begins claiming a real footprint instead of only surviving around a personal anchor.

Outpost is a Settlement tier, not a synonym for Core or Camp. This act is where the Settlement layer begins.

Role

  • Create the first Outpost-tier Settlement as the first permanent, population-bearing foothold in the settlement ladder.
  • Move the player from personal survival priorities into footprint, claim, designation, dependent support, and the first true settlement obligations.
  • Preserve the distinction between personal infrastructure and population-scale infrastructure: the Core remains the MC's anchor even as the Settlement footprint begins to matter.

What The First Outpost Means

  • The player now has a real Settlement entity at Tier 1.
  • The Outpost is the first population-bearing site and the first rung of the Settlement layer.
  • Claimed land and connected footprint rules become meaningful.
  • The player can start thinking in terms of designation, dependent support, and early district planning rather than only immediate local safety.
  • Settlement growth is still small-scale and fragile. The first Outpost is a narrow foothold, not yet a mature town.
  • Founding the Outpost does not redefine the Core as the Settlement or erase the Camp's mobile role.

Main Loop

The act's intended rhythm comes from the current settlement and act docs:

  1. Use the Core and Camp to identify the best foothold for the first Settlement rung.
  2. Found the first Outpost-tier Settlement.
  3. Claim the first connected Locations that actually matter for food, safety, routes, and materials.
  4. Use scouting, survey, and feature work to decide what this foothold should become next.
  5. Keep the Outpost alive under pressure while preparing the broader Settlement act that follows.

Required Outcomes

  • The first Outpost exists and is clearly distinct from the Core/Camp layer.
  • The player understands that settlement footprint depends on connected, controllable land rather than on disconnected wish-list claims.
  • Designation and future district logic become legible, even if the footprint is still small.
  • The player can identify the difference between a personal expedition problem, a household problem, and a settlement-support problem.
  • The player understands that the settlement layer begins here, not in Act 0 or Act 1.

Boundaries Into Act 3

Act 2 ends once the player has a functioning Outpost foothold and the next question becomes how that foothold grows into a broader Settlement system.

  • Core remains the fixed MC anchor.
  • Camp remains the mobile expedition layer.
  • The Outpost becomes the first rung of Settlement growth.
  • The next act can focus on settlement-scale development instead of the one-time transition into the first foothold.
