The Demon Cycle
Scope
This file owns the cross-game mechanism of the Demon Cycle: the recurring pattern of demon pressure on the mortal world, what triggers escalation to a Demon King event, what "stopping" the Cycle temporarily means, and how the Cycle relates to remains, afterwar conditions, and the Hero Calling. Specific historical Cycle peaks, Demon Kings, and afterwars belonging to a single game's storyline are gl-* scope.
Facts
Fact: The Demon Cycle is a recurring pressure pattern.
Demon presence accumulates in the mortal world, intensifies toward a breaking event, is temporarily reversed or capped by mortal and divine action, and then begins to accumulate again. The Cycle is not a single historical war; it is the underlying repeating structure that produces wars, gate breaches, Demon Kings, and afterwars across the setting's history.

Fact: A Demon King is the peak expression of the Cycle.
A Demon King is the apex form the Cycle produces: a unified demon-origin presence that has achieved coherence across the demon-origin layer and can project that coherence through gates into the mortal world at scale. A Demon King is not merely a powerful demon but a structural condition of the Cycle reaching its breaking event.

Fact: The Cycle does not reset to zero after a Demon King event.
Defeating a Demon King arrests the Cycle but does not reset it. Remains, wounds, taint fields, and political echoes from the prior peak persist into the next era and shape conditions for the next escalation. The setting's history is a sequence of arrested Cycles laid on top of one another, not a sequence of cleanly-resolved wars.

Fact: "Stopping" the Cycle means collapsing the Demon King or closing enough gates to break coordinated pressure.
In every recorded resolution, a Cycle is stopped by collapsing the Demon King's coherence or by closing enough gates to break coordinated demon pressure on the mortal world. It is never stopped by eliminating demons as a population. Demons remain present after every arrested Cycle; only their unified pressure is broken.

Fact: The Cycle has a non-mortal driver.
The Cycle is not random and is not driven by mortal events. Its escalation follows conditions in the demon-origin layer that mortals do not directly observe. Mortal action can hasten or delay specific events within a Cycle, but the underlying rhythm originates outside mortal causation.

Fact: Demon Kings can be partially destroyed, leaving a remains taxonomy.
A Demon King defeated without True Harm completion does not vanish; it disperses, fragments, or anchors into a remains taxonomy documented in ul-demon-king-remains.md. Partial destruction is the historically common outcome; complete destruction under True Harm is rare and difficult.

Fact: The interval between Cycle peaks is irregular.
Cycle peaks do not follow a fixed mortal calendar. The interval between peaks varies by era, continent, and the conditions left behind by the previous peak. Mortals cannot predict the next peak from the date of the previous one.

Fact: Whether the Cycle can be permanently ended is bible-only.
Whether any action can permanently end the Cycle, rather than arresting one peak, is reserved as bible-only material. It is not surfaced in any player-facing content.
