Strategic Map Research

Status: research notes, not authoritative.

This directory holds the working-out artifacts behind Valenar's strategic-map direction — the realm-scale design where each Location is a large (roughly 250-500 km2) playable territory rather than a tiny simulation cell. This research anchored the Valenar Province / Location / Feature / Site / Building hierarchy that the live design docs now codify.

Live authoritative docs live under examples/valenar/docs/. Per CLAUDE.md, docs/research/ is exploration scratch — useful as context, not authoritative on decisions.

Files​

  • design.md — the original "larger-scale strategic realm map" design fork. Captures the May 2, 2026 decision to abandon the 500 m / 60K Location contract in favour of large playable Locations.
  • model-exploration.md — readable fast-review of the model: scale, hierarchy, what a 346 km2 Location contains, Sites vs Features vs Buildings, hydrology, threat, output data shape, open questions.
  • model-exploration-full-notes.md — the long raw notes that model-exploration.md was distilled from.
  • jarvamaa-county-example.md — concrete worked example of a single Province (Järvamaa County) with eight Locations, used as the cross-check for the abstract model.
  • images/ — the 30 generated reference images the research draws on, in large-scale-target/ (25 PNGs matching the bigger map direction) and small-scale-reference/ (5 PNGs kept for contrast).
